In a dramatic turn of events, the Lok Sabha on Monday passed two crucial taxation Bills — the Income-Tax (No. 2) Bill and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill — without any debate, as Opposition members continued their protests over electoral roll revisions in Bihar and alleged election malpractices.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Bills in the absence of Opposition MPs, most of whom had been detained during a march to the Election Commission’s headquarters. By the time they returned, the Bills were swiftly passed through a voice vote amid ongoing sloganeering in the Well of the House.
Sports Governance & Anti-Doping Bills Also Passed
Alongside the tax Bills, the Lok Sabha cleared two significant sports-related legislations — the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025. These were also introduced in the Opposition’s absence.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted that India is preparing to bid for the Olympics, making robust, transparent, and accountable sports governance essential. He described the Bills as a “crucial step” towards strengthening the sports ecosystem.
Speaker’s Warning to Opposition
Earlier in the day, Speaker Om Birla accused the Opposition of “systematically disrupting” Parliament proceedings for 14 consecutive days. He stressed that such behaviour was against parliamentary rules and urged members to fulfill their responsibility towards the public instead of staging daily protests.
Government to Push Key Legislations Despite Disruptions
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly criticised the Congress-led Opposition for wasting the Parliament’s time. He announced that the government will continue passing important Bills in both Houses regardless of the disruptions.
Among the government’s legislative priorities are:
- Income Tax Bill
- National Sports Governance Bill
- Merchant Shipping Bill, 2025
- National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill
- Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill
Mr. Rijiju urged the Opposition to raise their concerns in a constructive manner rather than repeating the same protests daily.
